Last summer, Subaru introduced the next-generation Forester, and it didn’t disappoint. The reviews were clear: Subaru continues to deliver the quality, reliability, and value that drivers have come to trust.
But there’s something even more exciting on the horizon—a hybrid variant of the Forester is set to arrive in 2025. As the new year begins, let’s take a closer look at what’s in store and when you can expect it.
Arrival Timeline: First Half of 2025
Subaru has confirmed that the Forester Hybrid will debut in the USA in the spring of 2025. Shortly after, it will arrive in Canada. The model is expected to be available in both markets within the first six months of the year.
That means by next summer, you could be driving a 2025 Forester Hybrid—enjoying its enhanced fuel efficiency just in time for road trip season.
Hybrid Technology Meets Subaru's Signature All-Wheel Drive
While Subaru hasn’t released all the details, here’s what we know so far:
- The Forester Hybrid will feature a Subaru-designed flat 2.5-litre 4-cylinder engine paired with a hybrid system borrowed from Toyota.
- Subaru will retain its hallmark all-wheel-drive system, using a physical driveshaft connection to the rear axle rather than a purely electric setup.
- The gasoline engine is expected to deliver 158 horsepower and 199 lb-ft of torque, with total output (including the electric motors) potentially exceeding 200 horsepower.
The hybrid system will rely on a 1.1 kWh lithium-ion battery, powering electric motors housed in a single unit. These motors will handle most propulsion duties in many driving situations, producing up to 118 horsepower (88 kW).
Efficiency Gains
Subaru has revealed that this new hybrid system will be 20% more efficient than its previous generation of hybrids. While official fuel consumption ratings are still pending, the Forester Hybrid is expected to achieve an average of about 6.5 litres per 100 kilometres—or better.
